Culture of Ireland
The language is often described in its earliest form… The hybridity of Irish literature in English After the literatures of Greek and Latin, literature in Irish is the oldest literature in Europe, dating from the 4th or 5th century ce. Irish writing is, despite its unique national and linguistic characteristics, inevitably intertwined with English literature, and this relationship has led frequently to the absorption of Irish writers and texts into the canon of English literature. Many of the best-known Irish authors lived and worked for long periods in exile, often in England, and this too has contributed to a sense of instability in the development of a canon defined as uniquely Irish. But during the 20th century—particularly after the partition and partial independence of Ireland in —22—scholars reclaimed these writers and their works for Ireland. This shift can be seen in the changing use of the term Anglo-Irish literature, which at one time referred to the whole body of Irish writing in English but is now used to describe literature produced by, and usually about, members of the Anglo-Irish Protestant Ascendancy of the 18th century. Since the 17th century, Irish society has also simultaneously been a colonial one and an independent, national one.

And from the redness of his watery eyes and deep lines across his leathery skin, it was obvious he was from around these parts — these parts being the remote and blustery reaches of Leenane , a tiny village surrounded by mountains somewhere on the long inland road between Galway and Westport. He caught a trace of my accent as I ordered at the bar and he wanted to know from where it originated.
It was about two in the afternoon, and Tom he formally introduced himself shortly before hunkering down next to Mountaineering Man had probably been at Gaynors pub most of the morning along with the half-dozen other men who lined the bar drinking and chatting up the middle-aged woman who pulled the pints there. Me at Gaynors Pub. You can see Tom sitting behind me on the barstool to the left; moments later he came and sat with us.
With that, MM finished his Guinness and we bid farewell to Tom before heading on our way. In the car we chuckled about the inquisitive, funny man and chatted about the odd bunch of regulars at the bar. The bar is actually well-known in the area; scenes from the film The Field were shot here. But more than anything we fell in love with the warmth of the rustic pub and the authentic locals who frequent the place. About 20 minutes later we parked on a shoulder along the windy road back to Westport and strapped on our hiking boots for a ramble.
MM wanted me to see a hidden beach at the base of the Mweelrea mountains, one of his favourite areas to climb. He promised it would be lovely, despite the muddy bog we had to trudge through to reach it. With a pole to keep me steady I dutifully slogged through the flooded grass and followed MM, who occasionally turned around to see if I was still upright.

In the East, male Irish laborers were hired by Irish contractors to work on canals, railroads, streets, sewers and other construction projects, particularly in New York state and New England. The Irish men also worked in these labor positions in the mid-west. They worked to construct towns where there had been none previously.
Irish pubs have existed for roughly a millennium, with the title “oldest pub in Ireland” held by Sean’s Bar in Athlone, County Westmeath which was established in the 10th century. It was not until that the government required pubs to be licensed. It is the oldest law related to pubs in Ireland that is still in effect. During the 18th century it also became illegal to be married in a pub. Thus, the ‘ Spirit grocery ‘ was established. Pub owners combined the running of the pub with a grocery, hardware or other ancillary business on the same premises in some cases, publicans also acted as undertakers , and this unusual combination is still common today in the Republic of Ireland.
With the arrival of increased competition in the retail sector, many pubs lost the retail end of their business and concentrated solely on the licensed trade. Many pubs in Ireland still resemble grocer’s shops of the mid nineteenth century, with the bar counter and rear shelving taking up the majority of the space in the main bar area, apparently leaving little room for customers. This seemingly counter-productive arrangement is a design artefact dating from earlier operation as a spirit grocery, and also accounts for the differing external appearance of British and Irish pubs.
Spirit grocers in Northern Ireland were forced to choose between either the retail or the licensed trades upon the partition of Ireland in , so this pub type can no longer be found in the North. Elaborate exterior decoration is rare, but was typified by The Irish House on Wood Quay in Dublin, which was surrounded in by coloured friezes of nationalist heroes, and with iconic traditional themes such as round towers.
